Ripple moulding features repetitive, wave-like profiles carved or pressed into the wood frame. This distinctive framing technique gained popularity in 17th-century Europe, particularly in Northern Europe and France, prized for its optical texture.

Authentic pieces typically feature a hand-carved wooden base, often pine or gesso-coated hardwoods, covered in thin sheets of gold leaf or gilt composition. The joints often show traditional joinery, and older glass frequently exhibits slight imperfections or foxing.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the ageing of the gilding, the presence of hand-cut or older float glass with silvering degradation, and the construction of the wooden backing frame. Hand-applied gesso and tool marks rather than modern machine uniformity indicate age.

Positioning a large gilt mirror opposite a window maximises natural light and creates an illusion of expanded space. It serves as a striking focal point when hung above a minimalist console or left freestanding against a neutral wall.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry brush to protect the delicate gold leaf layer, avoiding chemical solvents entirely. Clean the mirror glass using a microfibre cloth and a minimal amount of glass cleaner applied to the cloth rather than directly onto the glass.
