FAQs

Gothic Revival Windsor chairs emerged during the 18th and 19th centuries, combining traditional stick-back vernacular chair construction with pointed arch motifs and architectural tracery inspired by medieval Gothic design.

These chairs were typically constructed using a combination of native timbers, frequently featuring a solid elm or ash saddle seat, yew or ash bentwood bows, and beech or fruitwood legs and spindles.

Authentic pieces often exhibit traditional joinery such as wedge-tenon construction, hand-carved saddles, subtle surface wear from age, and tool marks indicative of historic hand-tool fabrication rather than modern machining.

Pairing these wooden chairs with a clean-lined modern or rustic timber dining table creates a striking contrast that highlights their architectural tracery and sculptural qualities.

Maintain the timber by keeping chairs away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically treat the wood with microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish without sealing in moisture.
