A snuff mull is a traditional container used in Scotland for holding powdered tobacco, known as snuff, which gained popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These pieces are crafted from natural animal horn, frequently mounted with sterling silver rims and hinged lids, and often set with semi-precious Scottish stones such as cairngorm or agate.

Authentic examples from the early 19th century feature hand-carved and naturally curved horn, traditional silver smithing techniques, and are often unmarked or bear early British hallmarks.

As a small decorative object, it can be displayed on a bookshelf, desk, or mantelpiece alongside other historic curiosities to add texture and historical interest to a room.

To preserve organic materials, keep them out of direct sunlight and away from extreme temperature fluctuations, occasionally applying a minute amount of neutral wax or oil to prevent the horn from drying out.
