Description

A shapely Victorian desk chair crafted in ash and elm, combining comfort, utility and character. The shaped elm saddle seat features attractive interlocking grain, with the boldly turned legs and spindles crafted in ash.

Often referred to as a “captain’s chair”, distinct from the classic smoker’s bow, this type of desk chair was common in Victorian offices and railway stations.

The open curved back and elevated arms provide generous support, making this a particularly comfortable and practical option for everyday use — ideally suited as a desk chair, but equally well placed as a general occasional chair.

Presented in very good antique condition with some attractive aged surface wear. Structurally all solid, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1880.

Victorian desk chairs evolved during the 19th century to accommodate the needs of clerks, professionals, and academics, often featuring sturdy wooden construction designed for daily use.

These chairs were typically constructed using native British hardwoods such as ash for the framing and spindles, paired with elm for the solid, shaped seats.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned spindles, traditional joinery such as wedged tenons, and natural patination and wear consistent with age and use.

An antique wooden chair can function as a characterful desk seat in a home office or as an accent piece in a minimalist living room to add texture and history.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically feeding the surface with a traditional beeswax polish.
