FAQs

The balloon back chair style, popular during the 19th century, is characterised by its distinctive rounded, continuous backrest that resembles the shape of a balloon, often featuring carved scrollwork or pierced splats.

Cabinet makers of this era predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut, frequently pairing them with traditional joinery and upholstered seats finished with horsehair or wool stuffing.

Authenticity is typically determined by examining the grain and heavy weight of the rosewood, hand-cut joinery, traditional hand-carved details, and historical signs of age such as wax patination and oxidation on the underside.

Pairing these ornate antique chairs with a sleek, contemporary dining table creates a striking contrast that highlights their craftsmanship while grounding them in a modern setting.

Maintain the timber by applying microcrystalline wax periodically, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and keeping the furniture away from excessive heat sources to avoid wood splitting.
