Description

A collectable relic of WWI, a 1914 Princess Mary Christmas Tin.

Approximately 350,000 of these were sent out to the troops serving in 1914 as a result of Princess Mary organising a nationwide appeal via the Sailors and Soldiers Christmas fund. Originally the Princess Mary tins would have contained chocolate or cigarettes, together with a photograph of her and a Christmas card.

This example is in good condition for being 111 years old but the lonely surviving item inside is the Christmas card.

Date of Manufacture

Colin Brand Antiques has dated this Princess Mary Christmas Tin to the 1910s.

Issued during the First World War in late 1914, these brass boxes were sent by Princess Mary to all members of the British forces serving overseas on Christmas Day, typically containing tobacco, cigarettes, or sweets.

The tins are made of embossed brass, often colloquially referred to as gilded brass, featuring detailed stamped designs including the profile of Princess Mary and allied nation motifs.

Authentic pieces feature crisp embossing of Princess Marys profile surrounded by a laurel wreath, the monogram M, the inscription Christmas 1914, and cartouches naming allied nations such as France, Belgium, and Russia.

This type of historical object works well displayed on a bookshelf, within a glass cabinet, or on a mantelpiece as part of a curated collection of militaria and curiosities.

Preserve the natural patination and surface finish by avoiding abrasive metal polishes; instead, gently dust the surface with a dry, soft cloth and keep the item away from excessive moisture.
