A Brass Bound Writing Slope with a Fitted Interior to Include Inkwells, Pen...

19th century
Description

A lovely quality early 19th century rosewood and brass bound writing slope. Decorative vacant cartouche with matching escutcheon, working lock and key. Inside are two contemporary inkwells, a pen tray, lidded compartment and and nib holder. there is a very interesting provenance, details of which can be read on the label inside or detailed below.

Size: 16" (40.6cm) x 9.5/8" (24.5) x 5.3/4" (14.3) high

Circa: 1815

Stock no:4860

Dealers note: Margaret Wakefield (1789-1863) had six children, one of which, Sarah, died aged 14 in 1822. From the note attached to the writing board, that would indicate that the box was passed on either in 1822 after the death of Sarah or 1863 after the death of Mary. From the note it may have been the latter. There is a wealth of information online about this well known family.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
