The William IV period spans from 1830 to 1837, serving as a transitional phase between Regency and early Victorian aesthetics, characterised by robust classical proportions, heavy architectural elements, and restrained ornamentation influenced by Greek and Roman revivals.

These mirrors typically feature a carved pine or gesso-on-wood substrate, layered with bole and applied gold leaf or composition ornament, fitted with hand-silvered or early float glass plates secured with traditional wooden backing boards.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural ageing such as fine craquelure in the gesso, hand-carved joinery, oxidisation and foxing within the mirror glass plate, and the use of historic hand-mixed primers rather than modern synthetic gold paints.

An antique gilt mirror works effectively as a focal point when hung above a sideboard or console table, contrasting traditional metallic warmth against neutral, minimalist walls to create balance and depth in a modern room.

Gilt surfaces are extremely delicate and should only be dusted lightly with a dry, soft feather duster or microfibre cloth, avoiding all liquid cleaners, abrasive chemicals, and direct sunlight to prevent cracking or flaking of the gold leaf.
