Description

An excellent antique Georgian Chippendale period mahogany armchair. This very fine example was made in England, it dates from around 1760-80’s period.

It is of absolutely fabulous quality, with a very bold and beautifully carved solid mahogany frame. It has a wide and generous stuff over seat, sitting on strong cabriole legs with a stretchered base. The pierced back rest is beautifully carved, as are the scroll over arms.

We have had this re-polished and re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is excellent for its age, with a gorgeous colour and patina.

This armchair would also make a great desk chair.

The Chippendale style originates from the mid-18th century, drawing inspiration from the designs of Thomas Chippendales publication The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director, characterised by intricate carving, Chinese, Gothic, and French Rococo influences.

Authentic pieces from this period were predominantly constructed using dense tropical hardwoods such as imported Cuban or Honduras mahogany, valued for its strength, deep colour, and capability of holding intricate hand-carved details.

Authentication relies on examining joinery techniques such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, examining the patina and grain of the timber, and looking for traditional hand-carved elements like acanthus leaves and claw-and-ball feet.

Preservation requires keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, maintaining stable indoor humidity, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax rather than modern silicone polishes.

This piece works effectively as a standalone accent chair in a modern setting, paired with minimalist surroundings or clean-lined contemporary furniture to create a deliberate contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern simplicity.
