1940 - 1960
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale a 1960s carriage clock made by Tandridge of England that is in old shop stock condition I believe hardly used, keeping good time over the eight days signed on the dial by Tandridge.

The Case

The case is in solid heavy brass in the serpentine case style standing 17cm high x 9cm wide with a depth of 7cm it is in perfect condition with mint bevelled glass sides/front/back door and top viewing glass.

The Dial

The dial is in mint perfect original condition in white with the original black moon hands and Roman numerals and signed by Tandridge.

The Movement

The movement is an eight-day time only; the movement has been serviced so keeping great time over the eight days via the original jewelled escapement to the top.

I have a key for the clock that’s included.

Overall a very heavy quality carriage clock by a quality maker that looks stunning on display and contains all of its original features is quite a rare find these days.

I will post worldwide.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

First developed in France during the early nineteenth century, carriage clocks were designed as portable timepieces for travellers. They typically feature sturdy rectangular cases, hinged carrying handles, and glass side panels to protect and display the internal movement.

Traditional carriage clocks are constructed with polished or lacquered brass cases, bevelled glass viewing panels, and enamel dials displaying Roman or Arabic numerals. The mechanical movement utilizes brass plates and steel gear trains.

Authentic carriage clocks often display maker marks, stamps, or country of origin details on the dial face or movement backplate. Weight, solid brass casing, bevelled glass edges, and spring-driven mechanical components further distinguish genuine examples.

Placing a brass carriage clock on a fireplace mantelpiece, structured bookshelf, or polished desk provides a refined focal point. Combining classic horological brassware with contemporary ceramics or modern artwork creates a balanced decorative display.

Dust the brass case regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and clean the glass panels using a gentle, non-abrasive solution. Mechanical clock movements should be professionally serviced and lubricated every few years to preserve timekeeping accuracy.
