A Windsor chair is a wooden chair construction in which the back and legs are fitted directly into a solid wooden seat, traditionally originating in English rural areas during the 18th century.

Traditional English Windsors typically featured a combination of timbers, using elm for the heavy saddle seats due to its resistance to splitting, ash or yew for the bentwood bows and spindles, and beech for the turned legs.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-working tools such as adzes on the seat, tapered wedges securing the leg tenons through the seat top, and natural patination and wear consistent with age.

An antique Windsor chair can be used as a standalone accent piece in a contemporary living space, paired with a modern minimalist table to create an eclectic contrast, or utilised as a functional desk chair.

Maintain antique wooden chairs by keeping them away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, and periodically treating the surface with traditional beeswax to nourish the wood.
