FAQs

A garniture set typically consists of a central mantel clock accompanied by matching decorative side pieces, such as urns or candelabra, designed to create a symmetrical display on a mantelpiece.

These decorative items frequently combine natural stone such as marble or onyx with gilt bronze, often referred to as ormolu, featuring enamelled dial faces and brass mechanical clock movements.

Authenticity is typically assessed by examining the hand-painted enamelled dial, the quality of the cast brass or ormolu mounts, the hand-cut serial numbers on the mechanical movement, and natural ageing characteristics of the stone.

Such pieces serve as striking focal points when placed centrally on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table, contrasting sharply against minimalist or contemporary surroundings.

Maintenance involves dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical cleaning agents that can damage the gilt finish or stone, and having the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
