Rare Japanese Edo (Mid-19thc) Gold Lacquer Incense Case

19th century
Description

Exquisite Japanese Edo (early 19thC) gold lacquer incense case (kogo) decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e and kirikane on the cover with a lobed square panel enclosing the partially obscured veranda of a mansion in the upper left corner and a pine tree and branches of wisteria overhanging a stream in the lower right corner. The sides of the cover and box are embellished with Gyobu nashiji, the inside and base of dense nashiji, while the rims are silver. Comes in a lacquered wood storage box. Measures 8.5cm x 7.5cm x 1.8cm (3 5/16in x 2 7/8in x 3/4in).

Original superb condition.
