Description

Really nice large arch shaped continental mirror. This mirror is in mahogany and has a panel back for structural purposes as it is so large. I would say it is the original mirror plate. As you can see in one of the pictures there is a bit of aging to the right hand corner of the mirror and the odd scratch here and there, which adds to his character. Nothing unpleasant to see in the middle part of the mirror where you look. Unusual piece. Note it is very heavy so will need to be professionally installed.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century continental mirrors typically feature characteristic architectural arched tops, solid wood frames, and proportions designed to maximise light and create a sense of space in grand interiors.

These pieces were constructed using solid timber frames such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, joined with traditional joinery techniques and fitted with silvered sheet glass.

Authentication relies on examining the characteristics of the glass for minor imperfections and oxidation, checking for hand-cut joinery in the timber frame, and inspecting the backing materials and fixings.

Positioning a large mirror opposite a window enhances natural light, while leaning it against a wall rather than hanging it introduces an effortless, sophisticated focal point.

Maintain the frame with appropriate wood wax, avoid spraying liquid directly onto the glass to prevent moisture damage behind the silvering, and use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
