FAQs

A trumeau mirror is a traditional decorative wall mirror featuring an upper painted panel or carving, originating in 18th-century French interior architecture where it was designed to fit into wall panels.

These pieces typically utilise carved pine or hardwood frames with hand-applied gesso, water gilding, and traditional milk or chalk paint finishes, often housing mercury or early silvered glass plates.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-beveled glass with natural foxing, aged wood backings with handmade iron or brass fixings, and craquelure or oxidisation within the painted or gilded surfaces.

Position the piece above a contemporary marble console table or mount it on a minimalist wall to create a striking contrast between historical craftsmanship and clean, modern lines.

Dust the carved frame gently with a soft, dry brush and clean the glass using a cloth sprayed with a mild, alcohol-free solution, avoiding direct contact between moisture and the aged wooden edges.
