A superb example of a large early 19th Century campaign writing slope. It is made of mahogany with recessed brass military style handles, brass edging and a matching cartouche and escutcheon.
Inside, the box is fitted with a lovely green leather writing surface with a gilt tooled edge and it comes with a glass inkwell with brass screw top. There is also a pen tray and two lidded compartments. Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding three small drawers which springs open when a piece of wood beside the pen tray is pushed. There is also a long drawer on the side of the box which is held in place by a brass rod.
There is extra storage space below each section of the writing surface and there is an additional book rest with brass pegs which is stored under here and fits into two brass holes on the top of the box. The lid can be held up at an angle with a brass arm and this provides a reading stand.
The box is in excellent condition for its age and has been sympathetically restored and re-polished. It comes with a working key for the main box and the inner writing slope. There are no major damages to the wood exterior and the mahogany has a beautiful patina. The interior is clean and tidy and the leather is in good order. There are of course signs of age and use, some small knocks and marks but overall it displays beautifully.
The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.
