Regency Rosewood Brass Bound Writing Box 40cm in Excellent Condition C1820

19th century
Description

Regency rosewood brass bound writing slope 40cm wide in excellent original condition.

It has a shaped brass cartouche (blank) to the top and a shaped brass escutcheon, and deep brass edging all round with an inner line of brass inlay.

It comes with working key, and when you open it you see the black leather writing slope. The original inkwells were missing so we have replaced them with super quality examples with brass screw tops.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency writing box, often called a writing slope or lap desk, is a portable wooden container produced during the early 19th century designed to store letters, pens, inkwells, and paper.

These boxes were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, frequently featuring brass bindings, inlaid cartouches, and interior surfaces lined with velvet or embossed leather.

Authentic pieces from the Regency era typically exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, brass stringing or corner bindings flush with the timber, period-correct locks, and rich rosewood grain patterns.

An antique writing box can be styled as a functional desk accessory in a home office, displayed closed on a console table, or placed on a bookshelf as a decorative object.

Preserve the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, polishing the wood periodically with natural beeswax, and gently buffing the brass mounts with a soft cloth.
