This freestanding drinks cabinet dates from 1930 and follows the Queen Anne Revival style. Constructed from warm brown walnut and burr walnut veneer, the piece displays a shaped top with a central carved shell cresting, scroll detailing, and cross-banded edges. The upper section contains double doors with applied scroll mouldings and large, ornate brass back plates, complemented by a hanging tassel pendant. The lower section features two matching doors with similar brass hardware, resting on a shaped frieze with a central carved motif and short cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. The cabinet measures 168.3 cm high, 91.5 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, and separates into two pieces. Suitable for a living room, dining room, or home bar, this furniture item provides dual-section storage for bottles, glassware, and bar accessories. The upper compartment accommodates display shelving while the lower cupboard houses general storage space. The substantial proportions and decorative wood grain suit traditional and revival interior schemes, functioning as a practical drinks station for entertaining guests or storing household beverages.

FAQs

Cocktail cabinets became prominent during the 1920s and 1930s as home entertaining increased in popularity. Craftsmen frequently used highly figured burr walnut veneers laid over timber frames, drawing design influence from Queen Anne Revival and Art Deco styles.

These cabinets were constructed using hardwood frames finished with matched burr walnut veneers. Interior compartments often incorporated mirrored glass, glass shelving, and decorative cast brass hardware such as ornate hinges and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces display book-matched burr walnut grain patterns, hand-carved details along the apron or knees, and original period brasswork. Examining interior joinery for traditional dovetailing and checking for original glass fittings helps establish age.

Positioning a standing drinks cabinet in a dining area or reception room creates a focal point against modern neutral backdrops. Pairing the dark timber tones with polished brass accessories and contemporary barware balances historic and modern aesthetics.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly to preserve the grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber veneer from drying or lifting.
