Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Victorian vanity boxes gained immense popularity during the 19th century as portable containers for cosmetics, jewellery, and grooming implements, often featuring elaborate compartmentalised interiors to serve the personal needs of wealthy travellers and homeowners.

These boxes were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany over a secondary wood like pine, frequently accented with brass escutcheons, mother-of-pearl inlay, and secret drawer mechanisms.

Authenticity is determined by examining the joinery, such as hand-cut dovetails, the presence of original brass hardware, aged patination on the timber, and traditional hand-brushed French polish finishes.

A historical wooden box can be placed atop a chest of drawers, sideboard, or coffee table to function as chic hidden storage while adding rich texture and historical contrast to modern spaces.

Preserve the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood surface.
