FAQs

Lacquered cabinets have a rich tradition in Japan, particularly flourishing during the Edo and Meiji periods, where master artisans utilised refined urushi sap techniques to create durable, highly decorative pieces for storage and display.

Authentic pieces are traditionally constructed from lightweight wood cores coated in multiple layers of processed natural lacquer, often embellished with gold or silver metallic powder using techniques such as maki-e, and complemented by engraved metal corner mounts.

Authentication involves examining the depth and lustre of the lacquer finish, looking for age-appropriate micro-crazing or wear, inspecting the hand-engraved metal fittings, and verifying the construction methods typical of nineteenth-century Japanese joinery.

This piece works well as a striking focal point on a console table or sideboard, introducing textural contrast, historical depth, and a touch of metallic sheen to minimalist or eclectic modern rooms.

To preserve the finish, keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, dust gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid the use of chemical polishes or water.
