Description

This is a Regency domed top box or casket. Originally it would likely have been a sewing or work box but the interior is now bare, showing the pine carcass. The box has boxwood inlaid borders and a boxwood escutcheon. There are borders of gilt decoration too. There is a brass handle to either side. I have seen a very similar example before that had a swing handle attached to each of these brass knobs.

It comes with a key which works the lock, however the box will lock itself if you tip the box on its left side and unlock if you tip it on its right side.

The interior and underside are bare. There would likely have been baize or some other liner originally. There are two small cracks to the lid which have been restored professionally in the past, and the finish has a nice sheen.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

During the Regency era, tea was an expensive commodity, and caddies were lockable containers used to securely store and preserve tea leaves from moisture and theft.

These pieces were typically crafted from dense tropical hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany, often featuring intricate brass inlay, stringing, and hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the interior construction, hand-cut dovetailing, patination of the wood, type of veneer, and period-appropriate brass locks and hinges.

A period caddy can be placed on a console table, bookshelf, or coffee table as a decorative object that also functions as a discreet storage container for small items.

Maintain the finish by keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically apply microcrystalline wax to nourish the wood without damaging the historical patination.
