Description

Good early to mid 18th century Dutch solid walnut cabriole leg hall chair. Front cabriole shaped legs with carved knees and pad feet, united by turned stretchers near the base. Nice shape back splat with nice shape and carved top rail. Wooden seat with rounded edges. The chair is a nice mellow colour with waxed finish. Would look really nice in a hallway.

There are one or two old worm holes in places and the wooden seat might be an old replacement, it is hard to tell for sure but the chair has definitely always had a wooden seat as it is grooved in at the back.

SIZE; 19" wide by 16" deep by 42" high overall. Seat height is 18"

CIRCA; 1720 - 1740

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century Dutch seating reflects the height of European cabinet-making craftsmanship, heavily influenced by Baroque and Rococo design movements traded across the continent.

These pieces typically utilise dense figured walnut veneers over secondary softwoods, joined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery and hand-carved decorative elements.

Authenticity is assessed through examining hand-cut joinery, patination, timber oxidisation, tool marks, and historical repairs consistent with eighteenth-century workshop practices.

Pairing historic wooden chairs with minimalist or modern tables creates a curated aesthetic that highlights the craftsmanship and rich grain of the antique timber.

Maintain stable relative humidity, keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally feed the wood with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
