Antik Dragon Japanese & Other Fine Art has dated this Japanese Damascene Iron Box to the 1900s.
The lid is decorated with a beautiful village scene while on the sides are dragons, phoenixes and flowers. Inside the lid and base are engraved with birds. On the base is the Mt Fuji mark of Fujii Yoshitoyo. 6cm wide (maximum) x 3.2cm deep x 2.5cm high, weight 91.5g.
Very good condition with minor wear.
The Fujii company of Kyoto headed by Fujii Yoshitoyo (b 1868) exhibited domestically and internationally at the 1910 Japan-British Exposition, at the Tokyo Taisho Exhibition in 1914, and at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915 in the 'Gold and Silversmith's work' category. Fujii was awarded several first-class medals and some of their finest pieces were purchased by the Imperial Household. Unlike Komai, who use the zogan (inlay) technique, Fujii mostly used an etching technique on his works.
