FAQs

William IV overmantle mirrors date from the 1830s, bridging the Regency and early Victorian periods, and are characterised by classical architectural elements combined with bolder, heavier ornamentation.

These pieces typically feature gesso and giltwood applied over a carved timber frame, often housing segmented glass plates secured within a robust wooden backboard.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate joinery, hand-applied gold leaf with natural ageing or oxidisation, mercury silvering on older glass, and heavy timber construction on the reverse.

Placing it above a fireplace anchors the room with traditional symmetry, while positioning it opposite a window maximises natural light and creates an illusion of expanded space.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals, which can strip the delicate gold leaf and gesso finish.
