FAQs

The cartouche style features an ornamental frame with scrolled edges, resembling an unfurled parchment scroll or a shield, which gained popularity during revival periods for its dramatic silhouette.

These pieces typically utilized carved timber such as pine or hardwood, finished with gesso and layered with either genuine gold leaf or composition metal leaf.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the depth of the hand-carving, the natural ageing and foxing of the mercury or silvered glass plate, and the presence of historic gesso cracking beneath the gilding.

Positioning the mirror above a modern minimalist sideboard or fireplace creates a striking focal point, balancing historical craftsmanship with clean contemporary lines.

Dust the carved frame gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding all liquid cleaners on the gilded surface, and clean the glass using a lint-free cloth sprayed sparingly with distilled water.
