A writing slope is a portable, hinged box designed to open into a slanted writing surface, featuring internal compartments for inkwells, pens, and stationery, which became highly popular during the 19th century.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid secondary woods such as mahogany, pine, or oak, and veneered with exotic hardwoods like burr walnut or coromandel, often accented with brass banding and inlaid escutcheons.

Authentic pieces generally feature period joinery such as dovetail construction, hand-cut screws, high-security locks by makers like Bramah or Chubb, and natural ageing characteristics within the timber and interior velvet or leather linings.

This piece can be displayed closed on a console table or sideboard to add textual warmth and historical contrast to a contemporary living space, or utilised functionally on a modern home office desk.

Maintain the timber by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and apply occasional applications of quality microcrystalline wax to nourish the polished surface.
