A rather impressive Very Large Distressed Antique Period Louis XVI Giltwood Gesso Mirror surviving from around c1760.
Having it''s original Mercury backed Mirror Plate which has achieved the most wonderful distressed foxing to the glass throughout , the mirror is still perfectly useable to use but has that added history and style that is most desirable.
The crest is formed by the twin symbols of Louis XVI - a quiver of arrows crossed with a torch - they are accompanied by a laurel wreath and ribbon with a lovely little bird and flora.
The torch is the symbol of life and regeneration whilst the arrows give the ability to use force and justice.
Mirrors of this scale and opulence were always displayed in the most seen rooms of the building to display wealth and prosperity....
This mirror is offered in extremely distressed condition , while the Gesso is secure it is fragile , there are losses and old repairs but structurally it is sound , perfectly useable and once it''s on the wall you can just enjoy its history , imagine the faces it''s looked into and it''s faded Grandeur.
The mirror retains it''s original plate glass.
Original pine Backing also present.
A really beautiful item with it''s original plate glass with a greyish colour , a good sign of originality.
The item is offered in good antique condition with wear as expected with furniture of this age.
