Description

This is a very well made and great condition Georgian period mahogany open armchair. The fretwork back is very fine and has an almost Art nouveau look to it even though the chair is easily over 100 years prior to this period. This came from the Scottish boarders and I believe is a Scottish made piece. Elegant design and shape as well as being a generous size making it perfectly useable and would make a perfect desk chair.

Georgian furniture, spanning the reigns of the first four Georges, is characterised by classical proportions, refined craftsmanship, and a transition from heavy walnut to durable mahogany as the primary timber.

Cabinet makers typically utilised solid mahogany joined with mortise and tenon construction, often featuring hand-carved pierced splats, drop-in upholstered seats, and stretchers for structural rigidity.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as handmade pegging, genuine timber shrinkage, hand-cut secondary woods on the underside, and natural oxidisation rather than artificial distressing.

Pairing the rich dark timber with modern minimalist textiles or placing it against a neutral painted wall creates a sophisticated focal point that balances historical gravitas with clean, contemporary lines.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically nourish the wood with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone-based polishes.
