Description

A superb pair of antique Carolean Style carved walnut armchairs with cane backs. These were made in England, they date from around the 1880-1900 period.

The quality is absolutely amazing, with fine carving throughout. They have high caned backs, and are in the Carolean style. The details on the back rest are stunning, they have beautifully scrolled arms and sit on fantastic stretchered bases.

We have given these a clean and fresh wax polish, the condition is excellent for their age. The cane is all intact and damage free, and the seats have been re-upholstered in our cream cotton fabric. There is just some minor wear to the wood beneath the polish here and there.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Carolean style, spanning the reign of King Charles II from 1660 to 1685, emerged during the Restoration period and is characterised by opulent, Continental-influenced designs featuring rich carvings, canework, and luxurious woods.

These pieces typically utilized native or imported walnut, intricate hand-carved scrolling motifs, pierced crest rails, and woven cane panels for backs, assembled using traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authenticity is evaluated by examining the tool marks on the timber, the quality and wear patterns of the canework, the type of wood aging, and construction details that align with seventeenth-century manufacturing methods or nineteenth-century revival accuracy.

Positioning these statement seats as focal points against minimalist walls or pairing them with sleek, modern tables creates a balanced contrast between historical texture and clean-lined contemporary design.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the wood from cracking and the cane from drying out, cleaning gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoiding direct sunlight and harsh chemical polishes.
