Victorian Chinoiserie Gilded Mirror in the Georgian Style.

19th century
Description

Here is a completely unique Victorian gilt mirror created in wood and gesso in the Georgian Chinoiserie style.

Featuring the two original mercury plate glass mirrors, this piece is certainly a talking point, and having spent hours on the internet I've never seen anything quite so ornate.

Where to begin......both mirrors are set into a gilded mythical world of waterfalls, grottos, rocks, bridges, staircases and swirling foliage and shell like flourishes, separated by a central shelf.

Closely related to the Rococo style, Chinoiserie is characterised by exuberant decoration, asymmetry, and a celebration of nature, leisure and pleasure activities, all found in abundance on this mirror with its water cascading over rock formations, dripping down onto bridges spanning rivers and grottos.

Created and built on a central wooden frame, the carved wooden features are attached and covered in gesso plaster then gilded.

I have had the mirror cleaned and restored by the very talented James Bloomfield at Bloomfield Fine Art in Manchester, so it comes in good antique order, with the wear to be expected with a piece of this age.

The mirror stands 103cm tall, and is 53cm across its widest point - the shelf is 14cm deep, and is a real statement piece.

The mirror is reasonably lightweight and is attached to the wall by two hooks for screws - for the purposes of photographing it I attached a picture framing wire so that I could hang it more easily, but this is just a temporary measure.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further information or photographs.

I offer free delivery to mainland UK, and am very happy to help with quotes for shipping further afield.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
