Description

A good late 19th century Coromandel-wood upright Stationery and Writing Box by maker John Bagshaw & Sons of Liverpool.

The top lifts open vertically and the front falls forward (with a further hinge) to reveal the beautiful oak lined interior; a writing slope with superb gold-embossed leather writing surface. A manufacturers stamp "John Bagshaw & Sons Manufacturers Liverpool" is featured to the bottom of the leather surface. The 'upper' writing surface has a brass catch and leather tab which lifts and opens to reveal an immaculate paper storage compartment.

The action of the front falling forward allows the oak ink-well, stamp and pen-storage area to 'spring' forward. This compartment has spaces for two inkwells, a lidded stamp box and a pen tray. Above and to the right hand side of the pen and ink tray are three small solid oak drawers with brass handles.

The main body of the box is compartmentalised to hold stationery, envelopes, calling cards' pamphlets etc and to the right is a ceramic note board, concealed within its own storage slot (for pencil notation). At the back of the compartmentalised section is a larger 'slot' containing a folding leather bound 'blotting paper' or 'note-pad' holder. There are further slots for Calendar cards to the front.

Attached to the underside of the lid is an embossed leather pen and instrument / tool holder.

The exterior of the box is highly polished and in excellent condition with lovely ornate gothic style brass decor panels to the lid and front. To each side are quality ornate brass carry handles.

Complete with original Bramah lock (no key).
