Early 18th Century Spanish Walnut Cabinet

18th century
Description

An Extremely Interesting Early 18th Century Spanish Walnut Food Cupboard.

Designs of this sort seem to have been produced from the 16th century onwards but this example dates to the early 18th century. The cupboard consists of a moulded, projecting cornice above two doors with spindle "windows". This was designed as a sort of larder, keeping food safe from animals and out of the sun. Beneath the doors are two drawers with interesting geometric panelled motifs and, below them, two large panelled cupboard doors, also incorporating a variety of decorative motifs. Inside both top and bottom sections are shelves. The sides of the cupboard employ an arched, panelled motif and the escutcheons, hinges locks and key are all original and made of iron.

This piece has acquired a wonderful patination due to centuries of use. As a result the piece has a wonderful surface that only time and hard use can create. This is an extremely attractive piece of furniture that can be used in a variety of ways today such as as a bookcase, display cabinet or as a multi-purpose storage solution.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 18th-century Spanish cabinets, often inspired by Iberian Baroque traditions, typically feature robust solid wood construction, open spindle work lattice panels, and geometric hand-carved doors.

Craftsmen primarily utilised native timbers like walnut and chestnut, assembled using hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, secured with hand-forged iron hardware and wooden pegs.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-tooling, hand-hammered iron hinges, natural wear around handles, and turned spindle lattice sections originally designed for ventilation.

Position the cabinet as a standalone architectural element in a hallway or dining room, paired with modern neutral walls and understated lighting to highlight the textured woodwork.

Preserve the original patina by placing the piece away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and applying beeswax sparingly once a year.
