Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A girandole is a decorative wall mirror fitted with attached candle arms or light branches, designed to reflect light back into the room. Originating in the seventeenth century, these pieces became popular across Europe, particularly in Italian and French interiors.

Traditional girandoles featured hand-carved wooden frames, typically carved from pine or lime, coated with gesso and layered with gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques. Sconces were forged from brass or bronze, while mirror plates comprised silvered glass.

Authentic pieces often exhibit red or yellow clay bole beneath worn gilding, hand-carved joinery marks, and hand-cut glass with mercury silvering or natural foxing. The weight of carved timber and signs of age on the reverse timber backing also indicate authenticity.

A giltwood girandole can be mounted above a side table, console, or mantelpiece to create a focal point. Combining carved gilt details with contemporary neutral walls adds historical texture and visual warmth to hallway or dining spaces.

Dust giltwood gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft bristle brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that degrade gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass carefully using a damp cloth, ensuring liquid does not penetrate behind the frame edges.
