English 19th Century Mahogany Bergere Arm Chair By Gillows.

Mahogany Bergere arm chair circa 1830 by Gillows. Frame caned throughout, with arch top rail and down swept arms ending with ball terminals, fine turned front legs resting on Cope & Strong patent brass casters. The front and rear rails are stamped with a R to the underside which was used by the Gillows firm, reference Susan E Stuart vol 2 page 272. This form of chair is known as a curricle chair after a Roman design, adopted by Gillows in the early 19 century, the chair is in very good condition with its original patina, seat height 43cm, supplied with a feather & down cushion.
