Description

A German single door table cabinet. The front is inlaid with a Knight on horse back set within an oval and surrounded with a trophy of arms. The fitted interior with drawers and cupboards which are finely inlaid with architectural scenes. Retaining the original steel hinges and lock plate.

This design for cabinets was popular in Augsberg in the early 17th century.

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

During the 17th century, German woodworking centres such as Augsburg and Nuremberg became renowned for producing elaborate table cabinets, known as Kunstschranke. These compact cabinets were created for wealthy patrons to house small curiosities, medals, and personal valuables, featuring intricate architectural marquetry created from contrasting wood veneers.

These cabinets were constructed using a solid timber core, often oak or pine, which was faced with fine veneers of walnut, fruitwood, sycamore, and ebony.
