Description

A German single door table cabinet. The front is inlaid with a Knight on horse back set within an oval and surrounded with a trophy of arms. The fitted interior with drawers and cupboards which are finely inlaid with architectural scenes. Retaining the original steel hinges and lock plate.

This design for cabinets was popular in Augsberg in the early 17th century.

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This seventeenth-century German Renaissance table cabinet presents a rectangular profile constructed from walnut, fruitwood, sycamore, and oak timber with a warm amber brown finish. The single hinged door opens to reveal a fitted interior containing multiple small drawers and cupboards. Elaborate marquetry decorates the exterior surfaces, featuring a central knight on horseback enclosed by an oval frame and surrounded by a trophy of arms on the door panel, alongside architectural ruins and strapwork inlay across the internal drawer fronts.
