A vinaigrette is a small, portable container dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, designed to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar or smelling salts. It was carried in the pocket or worn on a chatelaine to counteract unpleasant odours in public spaces.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, often featuring a parcel-gilt interior to prevent the acidic vinegar from corroding the metal. The internal grille was typically pierced, engraved, or filigreed by hand.

Authenticity is usually confirmed by examining the hallmarks stamped on the interior rims or lid, which indicate the assay office, makers mark, and date letter. Genuine period pieces also exhibit hand-cut piercing on the interior grill rather than modern casting.

As a small cabinet of curiosities object, it can be displayed inside a glass-fronted vitrine, placed upon a stack of art books on a coffee table, or integrated into a mantelpiece vignette alongside other miniature antiques.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly with a soft microfiber cloth and a mild, non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding excessive rubbing over hallmarks and gilt surfaces. Store the item in a dry, tarnish-resistant environment to maintain its finish.
