Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in France during the 17th century and gaining widespread popularity in the 19th century, the Prie-Dieu is a specialized prayer chair designed for private devotion. It features a low-slung padded seat for kneeling and a high backrest topped with an upholstered rail to support the elbows during prayer.

French Prie-Dieu chairs were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, allowing for elaborate hand-carved detailing. The upholstery frequently utilised wool needlepoint, tapestry work, or velvet fabrics trimmed with decorative braid or fringe.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-carved timber joinery, hand-stitched tapestry or needlework upholstery, and original brass tacks or webbing. Look for historic wear along the base and top rest, along with design elements characteristic of the Louis XV or Rococo Revival movements, such as cabriole legs and central cartouche motifs.

In contemporary settings, Prie-Dieu chairs serve as distinctive accent furniture rather than functional seating. They work exceptionally well flanking a fireplace, positioned in an entry hall, or set within a bedroom corner to add architectural interest and historic texture.

Maintain the walnut frame by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish annually to protect the wood finish. Upholstery should be vacuumed gently using a low-suction brush attachment, avoiding chemical solvents that could alter the natural vegetable dyes in period textiles.
