Nineteenth-century French mirrors frequently drew inspiration from classical Louis XIV, XV, and XVI designs, characterised by symmetrical or asymmetrical scrolling foliage, cartouches, and neoclassical motifs executed in carved wood and moulded gesso.

These frames were typically constructed from hand-carved softwoods or hardwoods, coated with multiple layers of gesso and bole, then water-gilded or oil-gilded with genuine gold leaf.

Authenticity is usually verified by examining the reverse for hand-adzed or pit-sawn timber framing, early fixings, oxidised mercury or silvered glass with foxing, and the characteristic hairline cracking of aged gesso beneath the gold leaf.

Interior designers often place a large antique mirror leaning casually against a wall to create a sense of scale and reflect natural light, contrasting the ornate historical frame with minimalist modern furnishings.

Gilded surfaces are extremely fragile and should only be dusted lightly with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster; commercial cleaning sprays and moisture must be strictly avoided to prevent stripping the delicate gold leaf and gesso.
