It was listed by Cross Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A smart 18th Cent longcase clock by Joseph Leake of London. The case is in nicely figured mahogany and of typical ''London'' design with a long moulded trunk door and paneled base.

The good quality 8 day 5 pillar movement has a brass dial with silvered chapter ring and gilt spandrels. It has a subsidiary seconds dial and an unusual date dial to the arch.

The case is in good condition but has the expected signes of age and use and has had the odd historic repair. There is a veneer chip to the base. It has working locks and keys to both the trunk and hood doors.

The movement is a bit dusty but in good working order and keeping good time.

Free local delivery and setup (60mls), national and international delivery arranged at cost.

Date of Manufacture

Cross Antiques has dated this Antique Longcase Clock to the 18th Century.

Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, emerged in Britain following the introduction of the anchor escapement in the late 17th century, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower cases.

These clocks are traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, featuring brass dials, steel movements, and often applied decorative veneers.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-engraved brass dials, signature engravings by known makers, period-appropriate mechanical movements, and timber with natural age-related patina.

Such architectural timepieces serve as striking focal points in hallways or living areas, contrasting effectively against minimalist contemporary backdrops to highlight their historic craftsmanship.

Preservation involves keeping the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years, protecting the timber from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, and ensuring the case stands level.
