Antique Mahogany Rolling Moon Longcase Grandfather Clock John Banks Oldham

£2,000    $2,600    €2,399
DESCRIPTION:

This is an exquisite mahogany long case clock, which is of super grand proportions. It has an eight-day movement on a broken arch painted face with rolling moon. This truly is a majestic clock which has the most fantastic mahogany case and is incredibly detailed.

If we start with the hood, this has swan necks with arched moulded cornice and below the swan necks there is wonderful blind fretwork. The hood door is beautifully inlaid with stringing and is flanked by superb full reeded columns.

Moving down to the trunk, the lovely shaped full length door is flanked by quarter reeded columns. The door contains the most wonderful flame of mahogany. The key hole has a lovely shaped brass escutcheon.

The base has a lovely applied panel with the centre panel having a wonderful flame of mahogany, the front corners are canted and again have been beautifully reeded. The base is then raised on lovely ogee bracket feet.

The eight-day movement has a broken arch painted face with rolling moon and subsidiary second dial and date aperture. The four corners are beautifully adorned with beautiful delicately painted flowers and fruit. The centre of the dial also has paintings of two wonderful exotic birds. The clock has the most very pretty fingers.

The dial bears the makers name Jn Banks Oldham. He is listed in ''Greater Manchester Clocks & Clockmakers by Edmund Davies'' : ''BANKS / BANK / BANKES, JOHN, Oldham, 1787 - died 1806''. There is also a paragraph relating to the maker in the book.
