Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, free-standing, weight-driven pendulum clock enclosed in a wooden cabinet. Originating in the late seventeenth century, Georgian longcase clocks were prominent throughout the eighteenth century, serving as precise horological instruments and status symbols.

These clocks were predominantly constructed from solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, frequently featuring decorative marquetry, parquetry, or wood inlays. The mechanical movements were made from cast brass plates and steel arbours, paired with etched brass spandrel dials.

Authenticity can be determined by examining the movement for hand-forged components, brass square or arch dials with applied corner spandrels, and weight-driven mechanisms. Georgian cases often feature square or arched dials, period-appropriate joinery, and natural hand-finished timber patina.

A longcase clock creates a striking architectural focal point when positioned in a spacious hallway, entryway, or formal reception room. Pairing dark timber and traditional silhouettes with neutral contemporary walls balances heritage design with modern styling.

Keep the wooden cabinet away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuating humidity to prevent wood movement and finish degradation. The mechanical clock movement should be professionally cleaned and lubricated by a qualified horologist every five to seven years.
