Description

~ French - Circa 1855 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A lovely early antique French ormolu clock by Louis Japy, part of the great Japy clockmaking dynasty. It is of Louis XVI design and mounted with exquisite Sèvres style porcelain panels. The porcelain has a Bleu Celeste ground with delicately cherub, flowers and exotic birds. To the top is classical urn with a garland of roses trailing down both sides.

The dial is porcelain enamel on copper and is complete with original finely fretted gilt brass hands and convex glass. The rear bezel is glazed with frosted glass.

The French movement is of high quality and is by Louis Japy et Fils, the early version of the makers mark is on the movement back plate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is an old replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is clean and bright with some wear to the high spots. The dial is also very good. Porcelain is very good with some wear to the over-glaze gilt decoration, this has been touched in in places.

An antique French ormolu clock is a timekeeping device crafted from gilt bronze, typically featuring elaborate neoclassical or rococo designs popular in 18th and 19th-century France.

These clocks primarily use cast bronze treated with mercury gilding (ormolu) and incorporate hand-painted porcelain panels, frequently from the Sevres manufactory, alongside enamel dials.

Authentic pieces often feature finely chiselled ormolu details, hand-painted ceramic plaques with maker signatures or factory marks, and mechanical brass movements stamped by period makers.

Such pieces serve as striking focal points on a mantelpiece or console table, contrasting effectively against minimalist backgrounds or complementing traditional decor schemes.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and high humidity, dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, and avoid liquid cleaners on the gilt bronze or porcelain surfaces.
