Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Painted white dial with all-over fine cracking: original early nineteenth-century surface.
Knopped brass pillars between the plates: Georgian movement construction.
Cast brass Corinthian capitals on the hood columns: classic Regency detailing.
Slotted wood screws in the case: made before machine threading became standard.
Natural wood shrinkage and deep colour across the oak case: long domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This early nineteenth-century Georgian grandfather longcase clock stands in warm brown oak with visible grain, brass, glass, and iron components. The square hood holds a hand-painted white dial with black Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial, a calendar date aperture, and painted floral and anchor decorations in the corners. Flanking the dial are turned columns with gilt Corinthian capitals, while an open glass-panelled side door reveals the interior mechanism. The cabinet has distinct horizontal mouldings and a long trunk door below the dial. The piece measures 205 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 27 cm deep, requiring floor placement against a sturdy wall in a hallway, living room, or study where it can chime the hour on an eight-day movement.

An eight-day longcase clock is a tall, weight-driven clock movement designed to run for a full week plus an additional day between manual windings. These movements traditionally utilise two weightsone powering the timekeeping pendulum mechanism and the other operating the hour-striking chime.

Georgian longcase clock cases were predominantly crafted from solid woods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, sometimes featuring decorative veneers. The clock dials were made from brass or painted iron, while internal movements comprised brass gears, iron frames, and steel arbors.

Authentic pieces from this period typically display hand-painted iron dials, Roman numerals, and localized maker inscriptions indicating the town of origin. Look for hand-cut brass movement gears, joinery techniques such as hand-cut dovetails on the casing, and natural wood oxidation consistent with age.

A longcase clock serves as a focal architectural element when placed in an entry foyer, hallway, or dining space. Pairing dark oak or mahogany cases alongside modern neutral walls and clean-lined contemporary seating creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and minimalist modern design.

The wooden case should be kept away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, applying beeswax periodically for protection. Mechanical clockwork requires professional horological servicing every five to seven years to clean, oil, and balance the brass movement.
