This George II walnut cased longcase clock dates from the middle of the eighteenth century in the Georgian style. The warm brown timber features highly figured veneer on the trunk door and plinth front, accompanied by an arched hood with fluted columns and brass spandrels surrounding a twelve-inch engraved brass dial with a calendar aperture and subsidiary seconds dial. The movement strikes hours on a bell and includes a pull repeat facility, signed by Joseph Oxley of Norwich on a boss in the arch. Standing at 218 cm tall, this imposing upright timepiece serves as a focal point in a hallway, reception room or study in a modern home. Its traditional presence coordinates with classic interior aesthetics, standing directly on bracket feet.

Originating in the late 17th century and perfected during the Georgian era, longcase clocks were developed to house long pendulums and weight movements, serving as precise timekeeping instruments and status symbols in English households.

These clocks typically feature an oak carcass faced with figure-rich veneers such as walnut or mahogany, combined with cast brass dials, silvered chapter rings, steel hands, and internal iron weights.

Authentic period examples generally display hand-engraved brass dials, cast brass spandrels attached to the dial corners, hand-cut gear teeth, and signs of period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on the trunk case.

Positioning a longcase clock in a spacious entrance hall, stair landing, or dining room provides architectural height and a focal point that contrasts warm wood tones against modern light backdrop tones.

The mechanical movement should be wound routinely using the correct key, professionally cleaned and oiled every five to seven years, and kept in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources.
