Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early 20th century side cabinet is designed in the Chinoiserie style and measures 77 cm high, 104 cm wide, and 44 cm deep. The piece is constructed from wood with a black lacquer finish, accented by hand-painted gilt paint depicting figurative scenes and geometric borders across the two panelled doors, set above square tapered legs. The black surface, visible in the photograph alongside small round white hardware knobs, shows faint surface scuffs and minor rubbing to the edges of the top surface. Suitable for use in an entrance hall, living room, or bedroom, the cabinet provides surface display space alongside enclosed storage behind the doors. The compact proportions allow the furniture to fit neatly against a wall or beneath a mirror in various domestic settings.

FAQs

Chinoiserie lacquered furniture features decorative surface treatments inspired by East Asian art traditions, incorporating hand-painted figurative scenes, pagodas, landscapes, and intricate floral motifs over built-up shellac or lacquer resin coatings.

These cabinets were constructed with wooden frames, such as oak, pine, or beech, which were coated in layers of varnish or resin. Decorators used gold leaf, gilt paint, and ground mineral pigments to create detailed relief and surface decoration.

Authentic pieces from this era demonstrate natural fine crazing or micro-cracking in the lacquer, hand-applied gilt paintwork showing subtle brush variation, and period-appropriate joinery such as dovetail joints and original door fittings.

A black lacquered cabinet serves as a focal accent piece when placed against light, neutral, or textured walls. Interior designers often balance its dark visual weight with modern table lamps, ceramic vases, or clean-lined artwork.

Maintain lacquered surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, radiator heat sources, and high humidity to prevent cracking or lifting of the decorative lacquer finish.
