Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Carved eyelets and stitched seams: decorative folk treen carving.
Integrated sliding lid with thumb recess: standard nineteenth-century snuff box construction.
Softened contours and edges: natural rubbing from pocket carry and use.
Warm, dark hardwood patina: slow surface oxidisation over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

A novelty shoe snuff box is a small pocket container hand-carved in the shape of a shoe or pair of shoes, popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for storing finely ground tobacco.

These items were predominantly carved from dense hardwoods such as fruitwood, walnut, or mahogany, often featuring sliding lids, brass pique work, or bone inlays to mimic shoe laces and buckles.

Authentic pieces display smooth internal wear from frequent sliding mechanisms, organic surface patination accumulated inside carving crevices, and hand-cut joinery consistent with historical woodworking techniques.

Position the object inside a glass display cabinet, on an office desk alongside vintage stationery, or integrated within a styled bookshelf vignette surrounded by leather-bound volumes.

Maintain the object by dusting with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and applying a clear microcrystalline wax sparingly to protect the wood polish, avoiding exposure to extreme heat or moisture.
