Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian period mahogany fitted storage box has a warm brown colour with visible wood grain, a hinged lid, and brass hinges. The front contains a dark diamond-shaped escutcheon surrounding the keyhole, and the structure stands on bracket feet with shaped aprons. The interior is divided into sections by vertical wood dividers, including a lift-out panel on the left side with a handle cutout. It measures 51 cm high, 111 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, offering substantial surface storage. In a contemporary home, this chest functions well in a study, library, or hallway for keeping books, linens, and personal items neatly organised and out of sight. The deep lidded design allows it to double as a surface table or bench top in a living area or bedroom, while maintaining a classic furniture presence.

FAQs

Mahogany storage chests became prominent during the eighteenth century as durable, decorative containers for valuable textiles, documents, and household goods. Their construction evolved from simple utilitarian trunks into finely crafted pieces of joinery featuring polished timber veneers and fitted internal dividers.

Traditional chests are constructed using solid or veneered mahogany, often combined with secondary woods such as pine or oak for interior linings. Common construction methods include hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass strap hinges, and inset iron or brass keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-craftsmanship, including irregular dovetail jointing, original brass hardware with hand-cut thread screws, and natural wear around handles and keyholes. The interior timber should show age-appropriate oxidisation and slight shrinkage marks along long wood grains.

A fitted mahogany chest serves as functional storage for modern living rooms, bedrooms, or hallways. It functions well for organising throw blankets, media equipment, or seasonal linens while adding warm timber tones to contemporary schemes.

Maintain mahogany surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the wood grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, warping, or colour bleaching.
