Exceptional Quality 19th Century Satinwood Display Cabinet, Attributed to Edwards & Roberts

19th century
Description

An Exceptionally Fine Quality Late 19th Century Victorian Satinwood China Display Cabinet, In The Sheraton Revival Taste, Having Elegantly Shaped Arched Top With Superb Marquetry Inlaid And Penwork Decoration, Above Two Glazed Doors Enclosing Two Adjustable Shelves, The Bowfronted Base With Further Exceptional Marquetry Inlay And Fine Penwork Decoration To Two Mahogany Lined Long Drawers, Flanked By Further Inlaid And Crossbanded Sides, Raised On Very Elegant Square Tapered Legs With Banded Decoration And Original Brass Ball Feet.

Attributed To "Edwards & Roberts, London."

This really is a superb quality cabinet, with the beautifully figured satinwood displaying a wonderful rich golden colour and the exceptionally fine marquetry and penwork decoration being particularly worthy of note. The elaborate decoration incorporates a fascinating variety of classical and unusual motifs, including scrolling foliage, floral swags, winged mythical creatures flanking classical urns, and animal heads supporting decorative garlands.

Of particular interest is the exceptionally detailed penwork decoration to the bowfronted top of the base, depicting architectural landscapes on unfurled scrolls, surrounded by further foliage and classical motifs. The quality and intricacy of this work is quite remarkable and demonstrates the considerable skill involved in producing a cabinet of this standard.

The elegant arched top, beautifully proportioned glazed upper section and slender tapered legs are all characteristic of the Sheraton Revival style, whilst the combination of practical display space and two useful drawers makes this a wonderfully versatile piece of furniture. The adjustable shelves provide excellent opportunities for displaying porcelain, glassware or other treasured collections.

The cabinet is attributed to the highly regarded London cabinetmakers Edwards & Roberts, who were particularly renowned for their exceptional quality furniture in the late 18th century revival styles, specialising in fine marquetry, inlay and decorative cabinetmaking. The quality of the timbers, construction and elaborate decoration seen here are all entirely consistent with work associated with the firm.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this cabinet has been carefully inspected and attended to in our workshops by our skilled traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received an appropriate natural wax polish and is now ready to place straight into the home.

This 19th-century Sheraton Revival display cabinet is constructed from figured satinwood with a rich golden brown finish, complemented by glass doors and original brass ball feet. The upper section features an arched pediment with marquetry swags and penwork, enclosing glazed doors with fabric lining. The bowfronted base contains two mahogany-lined drawers decorated with marquetry, positioned above square tapered legs. Measuring 192 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, this cabinet stands upright on four legs. In a contemporary home, this versatile piece fits into a living room or dining room to store and display porcelain, glassware, and collections behind glass doors while providing extra storage in the two drawers below.

Late 19th-century Sheraton Revival satinwood furniture is characterised by classical proportions, floral marquetry, neo-classical swags, and pale timber veneers inspired by 18th-century English designs.

These pieces typically incorporate satinwood veneers over oak or pine carcasses, accented with crossbanded borders, hand-cut marquetry inlay, and glass panel doors.

Authentic pieces often feature stamped drawer tops or brass lock plates, precise dovetail joinery, detailed marquetry or painted motifs, and high-grade drawer linings such as solid mahogany or oak.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall to highlight the golden satinwood grain, using internal shelves to exhibit curated ceramic collections, glassware, or books.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent veneer movement or drying, and clean the wood surfaces regularly using a dry microfibre cloth followed by natural beeswax applied sparingly.
