This Victorian storage box comes from the workshop of Gillows of Lancaster in the English Country House style. Constructed from oak and pine with a light brown timber colour, the rectangular timber frame includes a hinged lid, visible dovetail corner joints at the edges, a central brass keyhole escutcheon, and noticeable surface scuffs and marks indicating age. Measuring 51 cm wide, 33 cm high, and 30 cm deep, the piece fits practically onto a sideboard top in a living room, hallway, or study for keeping small items organised. Inside, the timber bears the maker's stamp. The construction is solid throughout, making it a functional addition to everyday interiors where portable storage is needed.

An antique silver box, often crafted during the Georgian or Victorian eras, was designed to store and secure valuable domestic silver, cutlery, and tableware. Master cabinetmakers like Gillows produced these sturdy timber chests fitted with brass locks and soft interior linings.

These chests were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or pine, featuring precise hand-cut dovetail joints for structural strength. Interiors were often lined with baize or velvet to protect precious metals from oxidisation and surface scratching.

Authentic Gillows items frequently feature stamped maker marks such as GILLOWS LANCASTER or GILLOW on the top edge of doors, drawers, or lids. High-grade joinery, precise dovetail construction, and quality brass lock escutcheons are additional characteristics of genuine period pieces.

A compact antique wooden chest functions as a functional decorative object placed on a sideboard, console table, or deep window sill. It introduces organic timber texture and historical context into contemporary neutral or traditional room schemes.

Dust the timber surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the original patination. Position the chest away from direct radiators and fluctuating humidity to prevent the timber from warping or splitting.
