Thomas Langley, London Lantern Clock C.1665

17th century
Description

A 17th century English lantern clock by Thomas Langley of London. An engraved dial and surmounted by an inner and outer bell for the quarter striking. A very well engraved dial centre. Side opening doors and standing on turned feet. A later, Victorian fitted twin fusee mechanism with quarter striking on 2 bells. The rear plate shows where an external alarm would have been positioned.

Thomas Langley of London was apprenticed to Samuel Davis in 1655 and freed in 1664.

Whilst the clock has been 'upgraded' as many were to a quality double fusee mechanism in the Victorian period, the clock frame is very original and dating to circa 1665.

Height 15 1/2" / 41cms Width 6 1/2" / 18cms (inc. chapter ring) Depth 6 " / 15cms

This seventeenth-century English lantern clock by Thomas Langley of London is constructed from yellow brass, iron and steel. The framework rests on turned ball feet and supports an overhead bell beneath a top finial, accompanied by pierced frets and side opening doors. The silvered chapter ring frames a well-engraved dial centre bearing the signature of Thomas Langley London alongside Roman numerals and a minute track, accompanied by dark metal hands and key winding holes. The structure contains a later Victorian twin fusee mechanism with quarter striking on two bells, while the rear plate shows the position of an original external alarm. Height 41 cm, width 18 cm, depth 15 cm. The piece sits suitably on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or study as a functional historic timepiece.

Originating in the early 17th century, lantern clocks were the first type of clock widely produced for domestic use in England, characteristically constructed from brass with a prominent top bell and weight-driven movement.

These timepieces were predominantly constructed using cast brass for the frame, pillars, and decorative frets, paired with iron or steel internal movement components and a silvered brass chapter ring.

Authentic period examples typically feature hand-engraved dial centres, original casting marks, evidence of historical conversions from balance wheel to pendulum escapements, and period maker signatures.

A brass lantern clock serves as a focal decorative object when displayed on a wooden sideboard, a chimneypiece mantel, or an open wall shelf alongside minimalist ceramics or modern artwork.

Keep the brass surfaces dust-free by wiping regularly with a soft dry cloth, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that can remove historical patination or silvering, and consult a professional horologist for mechanical servicing.
